I think your auditor may be drunk with power. Measuring in both units will
only cause confusion at best or possibly lead to increased variation in your
data collection process at worst.

Maybe you should remind the auditor that mixing units is what caused NASA's
Mars Climate Explorer to crash.

Of course, you could make a business case for just smiling and doing what
the auditor requests; you know, the whole path of least resistance thing,
pick your battles, etc.

Rick,

Why ever would an auditor ask that you do this? This is way out of line.

Why don't you tell the auditor you will have an answer tomorrow at 1:00
p.m., or would he like it at 1300 military time instead?

Subject: Re: [TN] System International Units versus Imperial English units??

Ridiculous bureaucracy. :-( It is perfectly legal, even in the USA, to use
the metric system as a unique method and has been since the 19th century,
1866 to be precise (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_system_in_the_United_States ).

Of course, whether you comply with the request of the auditor or not is up
to you but, IMHO, he has no grounds for enforcing the issue. If your house
specs say n °C ±m °C, you are perfectly in your rights to keep it at that.

temperatures per J-STD-001D. All of our monitoring is done in Celsius which
is the main unit of measure in the standard. Imperial English (Fahrenheit)
is only used as a reference shown in parentheses. The auditor is insisting
that we need to measure in both units, i.e. we have a temperature with a +/-
15C tolerance and we would also need to measure it in degrees F at +/- 27F.

you handle it? We've cited the section of the standard where it explicitly
indicates that the IE units are equivalent and shown for reference only but
this response was deemed as 'inadequate'. I'd typically put this in the
category of Friday afternoon humor except we have a corrective action to
respond to due to this.
