We have a customer who is questioning how we audit soldering iron temperatures per J-STD-001D. All of our monitoring is done in Celsius which is the main unit of measure in the standard. Imperial English (Fahrenheit) is only used as a reference shown in parentheses. The auditor is insisting that we need to measure in both units, i.e. we have a temperature with a +/- 15C tolerance and we would also need to measure it in degrees F at +/- 27F.

My question is has anyone come up against this type of issue and how did you handle it? We've cited the section of the standard where it explicitly indicates that the IE units are equivalent and shown for reference only but this response was deemed as 'inadequate'. I'd typically put this in the category of Friday afternoon humor except we have a corrective action to respond to due to this.

Thanks for any comments or feedback.
