Press-fit (compliant pin) connectors are also often used when a
double-sided SMT design is desired and where one wants to avoid the need
to selectively solder a connector that requires good mechanical
integrity. Performing a double-sided reflow and then simply pressing in
the connectors is a nice, clean process.

Victor,
Compliant pin connectors are typically used on assemblies that are
difficult to solder.  These are usually thick backplanes (.125" - .300"
and up).  The heat required to wet and flow solder joints through thick
boards can be detrimental.  Compliant contacts are ideal in these
situations.  When using compliant contacts,hole size is critical (both
drill and finish.
I know this is a very general answer.  What is your application?
