Hello Victor,

HASL is a permitted finish for compliant pin; actually preferred and in some connector specifications required. The movement away from HASL in compliant pin and using alternate finishes is associated to all the reasons folks are running from lead solders.
The challenge with HASL is when pin size and associated circuit board hole is small HASL can fill the PTH with solder. In order to avoid this condition the drill hole is increased maximizing the finished diameter. Happy ending for pin insertion although without proper drill bit size usage a latent mechanical defect is introduced. Using the proper drill size sometimes the fabricator will increase the air velocity to remove solder fill condition leading to thin HASL coating; a concern for some.
Related challenge is flat copper in the PTH. If the copper knee is out of control the final configuration of the PTH may be problematic. The inverted hour glass shape may be detrimental to mechanical strength although if the correct drill is used it shouldn't. The high knee actually impedes the insertion process creating undue stress and false pressure readings.

I know that some work is due on the IPC spec and possibly being introduced in AZ or APEX coming up soon.

Brad

  Fellow TechNetters:

Can some one share their experience with compliance pin technology?
Is it permissible to insert a compliance pin in a barrel with a HASL
  process?
Does IPC have any documentation with regards to compliance pins
  technology?

  Victor,
