I would endorse Brian's comments on the need for immediate cleaning of water
soluble flux residues, unless the user wished to undertake the soaking of
PWAs in a buffered solution prior to proper cleaning. I recall a NEPCON West
paper by F. Cala of Church and Dwight on the ability of the sodium
carbonate/bicarbonate 'Armakleen' cleaning products to neutralize WSF residues and
prevent solder joint surface etching (Neat pictures of the etching). The joints
quickly developed a matte finish from the acidic WSF residue microetching,
instead of the preferred 'shiny' look.
[If you have a consumer product that fails fairly quickly into its life
cycle, open it up and look for corrosion, which may well have resulted from
inadequate cleaning of WSF residues, especially if you are in an elevated humidy
location.]
