I would get something free (or extremely cheeeeep) that the students
could take home and use for assignments. Berwyn's Circad would be an
example, but there are others such as Eagle or Vutrax that offer demo
versions for free, and lots more that sell base versions for less than
$200. They are often a bit difficult to use and learn, but that is
probably a GOOD thing -- since higher level software ALWAYS has a steep
learning curve, the students may as well get used to it early. This
would get them to a basic "connect-the-dots" trainee designer level, and
they would appreciate the higher level tools >much< more when they are
exposed to them (hopefully in a later class).
Gary's comment about employment trends is right on the mark, just giving
them a CID and basic software skills will NOT get them a job in the
present (and probably future) employment environment. US companies are
hardly willing to spend money on basic research, much less allowing a
designer time to learn their flavor of design tool. The bottom line is
everything :)
