I have two contributions on this one.

First, based on all the PTFE RF circuit boards out there, the 160C should
not be an issue. We've built a product for years that has a heat sink
soldered to a PTFE board with SnSb solder that routinely reaches 260C
without issue. There have been occurrences though where an oven profile was
setup wrong or a board got stuck and the temperature exceeded this. The
warnings about HF fumes are real and most likely will result in evacuation
of a building.

Second item - Non-technical. A few years ago Gore visited my shop,
introducing some touring aficionado. We received the standard promotional
trinket, in this case a box of their PTFE dental floss. Now I'm not sure if
this is true or not but the Sales guy provided a testimonial on the strength
of their material. He was driving in wintry conditions with tire chains
when something on one of the chains broke. Continuing to drive would have
done untold damage to his car. After fiddling unsuccessfully with the
chains for a while he remembered he had some of this dental floss in his
traveling case. He tied together the broken chain ends and completed his
trip without incident.

Something to perhaps keep in mind, is that at higher temperatures Teflon can
give off hazardous fumes such as hydrofluoric acid. I "think" that this can
start to occur at around 300 degrees C but that needs to be checked on the
MSDS for whatever product you intend to use.

Not that I would expect that your wave solder would ever get that far out of
wack, but there is always the chance of accidents.

Just something to keep in mind...

Jeff

seriously now. i use this stuff, because my dentist gives it to me. it
slips in my fingers until i use a few times. maybe someone could contribute
their used floss for this project.

Hmmm... Teflon is available over the counter at the drug store in the form
of 'Glide dental floss'... I wonder if that would work... :)

It might be like Teflon lacing cord.

        Kelly:
If the ty-wrap is at the top of the board and not through the board,
then the wrap may see less than 160 C. Either way, if there are teflon
Ty-wraps, they will be able to handle it.
        Good luck,
        Ramon

Kelly,

There used to be a product called a silicone rubber 'mouse tail' that was
silicone rubber cord that tapered at the ends and you could insert it into a
pair of plated or non plated holes and pull on the tapered ends and the
rubber would catch and bunch up into the opening of the hole restraining it
from coming loose. The were novel back 15 years ago, I have not seen them
for some time... I think the high temp resistance of the silicone rubber
would be a nice way to hold larger parts in place while soldering similar to
the way a plastic tie-down would under normal temps.

I looked for them on the internet but did not find any mention of them.
Sorry...

Has anyone come across any ty-wraps that will withstand wave solder temps?
We'll be operating around 270° C.
