I believe you are referring to the overall Design Engineering hierarchy
for a given product. The design hierarchy consists of the configuration
management system; the control over the revisions of the BOM, Assembly
Drawings, Schematics, Engineering change control, software revisions,
etc, of the top-end product (finished) and going on down to the circuit
cards, the components, the pwb, etc.
