It's not labels that we have the problem with, but the ink-stamped or
painted markings on metal parts...and we've always been fighting
this problem to a certain degree.
It's just that now it seems we're building a lot of assemblies for a customer
that use these types of parts, and they're real picky when it comes to markings,
only because their customer is.
We use Kyzen Aquanox 4512P in a Aqueous Technologies SMT800 batch cleaner.
We run the concentration from 10-20%, at a wash temp of 140 F. The rinse is ambient
temp DI water.
Almost every one of these assemblies get conformal coated with urethane coating.
So we try and make sure the boards are as pristine as possible prior to coating.

Is the label a just poly or is it kapton backed? The ink probably is not thermally burnt in but printed on it. What kyzen are you using? I had found that the Ionox 3330 does a really good job with maintaining poly labels with printed ink on transformers and relays (spray over immersion). What wash process are you using (in-line spray over spray, spray over immersion, or batch table top)? What concentration? Is this a new problem on a specific lot number or has this always been something that you have always dealt with?

Hi Steve:
It has to do with the part manufacturer not properly cleaning
the parts prior to marking them. Some one is cutting corners. That is
the root cause of the problem. It is a pain to ensure the manufacturer
does a better job in marking the parts, but it would be a permanent
solution without introducing more process steps in your facility for
other people's laziness, or make them place labels such as Brady labels.
They stay on very well, even on dirty metal.

We've got a rather irritating problem here that is starting to become
more than just irritating, it's become a real issue. It has to do with
part marking.
J-STD-001 states:
9.2 Marking Assembly identification such as part numbers and serial
numbers shall remain legible (capable of being read and understood)
after all tests, cleaning and other processes to which the item is
subjected.
Additional markings (such as labels added during the manufacturing
process) should not obscure the original supplier's markings.
Individual component markings, reference designators and polarity
indicators should remain legible and components should be mounted in
such a manner that markings are visible.
The only parts that we have a problem with are metal parts such as
hybrids or DC\DC converters. We clean with Kyzen and have a real problem
with the markings coming off in wash. We try to protect them with a
piece of kapton tape, but that only works hit and miss.
Does anybody else have the same problem? What have you done to protect
the part markings?
