We do quite a bit of work w/ flash gold on chip tester boards (flash in SMT
areas and full hard gold in probe contact areas). If works fine for those
purposes. We solder assemble w/ almost immediately upon receipt to keep
the silicon development moving.

If on the other hand your pwbs need to provide long shelf life or if your
application has high rel SIR/electromigration concerns
then do your reliability homework.

In our experience electrolytic gold won't preserve solderability as well as
some other finishes (e.g. ENIG) if there's a long shelf life and it
typically doesn't provide as clean (SEC test) a pwb as other finishes. A
lot of that depends on your environment (storage, assembly, flux/cleaning
and application use).

It's all a matter of degrees. Flash Au suits our particular purpose fine
but remember to consider the particulars of you application and do your due
diligence.

cheers,
dw
