Hi John! As an avid waterfowl hunter I can personally attest to the poor
ballistic properties of Bi shot - it works much better than steel shot but
the ammunition metallurgical folks are doing some pretty nifty things with
tungsten and other alloy combinations.

ALLEN,
Actually most military bullets around the world use a steel core for
penetration. Either a gilding metal (cupre nickel) or iron/soft steel
jacket is used to protect the bore from the hardened steel core.
Bismuth has only been used in shot for water fowl but is being replace
by either iron or tungsten alloys for shot. Lead is still used as a
bullet core for most commercial rifle and pistol ammunition.
