This is what i found for cheap (sort of) and quick. It was developed by Hybrivet and NIST. (There are other sources for the same, almost exact, thing) It's good to <0.5% - let's face it, we're looking to find if stuff is 63/37 or LF so 0.5 should do it. It's about $2.00 to 2.50 per so it's not something to be used indiscrimately. The reason for the indirect test is to find if Pb present without contaminating the board. This stuff will leave a residue, if applied directly, which must be cleaned off to assure a good connection later. There is a cheaper variety (~$0.50) available but if you read the MSDS for it, it looks like a sulfide containing material which isn't what we want. The Hybrivet is rep'd by Kester (No, I'm not advertising)and available through them. A 48 test kit will cost about $115 including little abrasive q-tips and trays.

I hesitate to put this on TechNet because it is a Brand.

Subject: [TN] Lead-Free testing

Is there an easy way to verify that an assembly has been produced with
lead-free solder? Conversely, is there a quick and easy test for lead in a
solder joint?
