John,
You call HASL smooth?! It certainly isn't flat by any stretch of the
imagination. Anything is flatter than HASL.
The only time I have seen a smoothness spec (well roughness spec) for a
board surface finish was when I was at Nortel and there was a daughter
board that was going to be pushed in and out of a connector several
times over its lifetime and there some concern that a rough gold finish
could wear away the contact surface in the connector.
1) No you cannot HASL with Silver. Silver melts at 961.78C. This is a
tad hot for the board epoxy.
2) See second paragraph.

Subject: [TN] plating smoothness
Does anybody call out a specific smoothness finish ever on a fabrication
dwg for the HASL? In these days of lead free, going forawrd, I am
wondering if silver will have the same smoothness finish as SN63/PB37
using HASL?
1) Or can you HASL with silver?
2) Does anyone have an example of a fab note for such a callout? Or is
this getting too specific?
