Dan,
Thanks for the concise details. I am figuring that the thermal
plotters will probably fall under RoHS/WEEE, they are used by seismic data
processors and professional graphics companies producing large format (up to
54") output. Most of the electronics for these are produced by
subcontractors, who I will be discussing RoHS compliance with.
The seismic acquisition and processing equipment is where I have the
most concerns. This equipment requires functionality and uptime under severe
use/abuse conditions and environments encompassing everything from the
Arctic tundra in the dead of winter to the Saudi desert in the peak of
summer....

I would be very careful with that theory if you product requires
electricity to function properly!! From the WEEE
directive................
(10) This Directive should cover all electrical and electronic equipment
used by consumers and electrical and electronic equipment intended for
professional use. This Directive should apply without prejudice to
Community legislation on safety and health requirements protecting all
actors in contact with WEEE as well as specific Community waste
management legislation, in particular Council Directive 91/157/EEC of 18
March 1991 on batteries and accumulators containing certain dangerous
substances(9).
(a) "electrical and electronic equipment" or "EEE" means equipment which
is dependent on electric currents or electromagnetic fields in order to
work properly and equipment for the generation, transfer and measurement
of such currents and fields falling under the categories set out in
Annex IA and designed for use with a voltage rating not exceeding 1000
Volt for alternating current and 1500 Volt for direct current;
There is plenty of discussion, and to my understanding agreement, that
the categories are guidance not a checklist.
I am curious why you feel your plotters are not IT equipment?

Printer units
and other products and equipment for the collection, storage,
processing, presentation or communication of information by electronic
means

Arnold,
Thanks for the info. The bad thing is it looks like Germany does
not
exempt Category 9 from their implementation of WEEE. The good thing is I
cannot find anything within any category that even comes close to a
description of our products and their functions. So it may not be that
we
are trying to see of we fall under an exemption, but whether we fall
under
RoHS and WEEE at all....

Hi Michael,
attached is Germany's ElektroG Law which goes a little further on the
Measuring and Control products than does the original RoHS-Directive;
(See attached file: Elektro_G_English.pdf)
If you are exporting products to Europe, I would suggest visiting the
following website

and contact Rosemary Gallant if you want to be on the mailing list for
WEEE
and ROHS information.

How does one determine/confirm if a product falls into one of the
current
exemption categories? Our company manufactures equipment used in oil and
gas
exploration, along with commercial thermal film plotters. None of our
product lines appear to lend themselves to any of the applicable RoHS
categories, other than the currently exempted 'Measuring and Monitoring
Equipment'. Is there someone in the EU governing body who reviews such
manufacturer requests to assure that you actually fall under an exempted
category?
Mike
