Hi Genny, IPC LF Listservers,

I haven't followed things well lately on IPC-LF yet in visiting I saw your
note. I also haven't yet read the NPL report yet from what I have seen I
expect it has limited usefullness.

<My initial question was whether we could switch to using Pb free wire
solder for hand-soldering operations on our production floor, even
though our production products are still using stuffed boards that were
populated with SnPb solder paste.
<
<This would be for installing things like connectors, shields, or doing
rework, etc. BGA's are never soldered by hand.>

In general I wouldn't recommend it, yet I come from a known reasonably high
reliability environment. Mixing means you have gone out of control.

Will your boards, thru holes and lands take the elevated temperatures?

If your customers have throw away products and none or very few ever come
back for warranty then it is OK. If you do have warranties try to remove
them unless they are very short warranties.

Start collecting some data and develop a product Return Program.

Yours in Engineering, Dave
