As a designer who has work in companies with unions, I have only one
thing to say:

ARE YOU CRAZY!!!!!!!

Of course they would work to protect your job, or as long as your dues
puts money in their pockets, but the obstructions they would put in the
way of designing a project would all but stop further development of new
products.
