You hit the nail on the head. PC fabs do not loose by passing on experience.
The ocean is big enough for all. Manufacturing is too big a package to be
transferred by a few nuggets.

To get experience/ know how you need analytical equipment and effort. When
manufacturing moved to china the old fabs hurt and may be a few shut down.
That body of know-how is not available on the net today.

The nature of Technet members has also evolved. More rigid. Still as long as
lot of old guys hang around it is fun. Let us hope times change again for
the better. The new breed of manufacturers in east will mature enough to
share.

Bets wishes

Valerie,
there are IPs that can be patented, and there are "know how's" fall between
the line of "experiences, knowledge that consultant sells" and "trade
secrete". Many of those are friendly exchanged (use to be) on the TechNet.
The change were occur about few years ago, when jobs start shifting
elsewhere. The many of know-how's obtained on the TechNet "hurt" someone's
job. I, personally, got e-mail from some consultant about the free
knowledge that actually hurt his business (I am sure some big name do not
need to worry about such... but for someone that is just "out of job" and
try to make some living, I can understand). this is not the only case in
the past few years. Blame on the environment change. It is the same
regarding the optoelectronics. When you see more marketing managers on the
standard committees, the environment change is very clear...
TechNet is great use to be, to get back to the good old days, you need
collaboration in a common front. that is promote the technology growth. I
am participate in a small way, however, I am much more careful than
before...
Hopefully, my honesty is being appreciated here. (duck under the table...
no arrows please...)

Rudy,

I'm either not understanding what you are saying, or if I do understand it,
I disagree.

Most of the information passed on TechNet is in the public domain; it is
stuff we learn from tech articles and seminars and stuff that "everyone
knows" who has been around awhile. I don't think anyone is passing on
intellectual property via tech net, no matter where they come from.

Did you mean to imply that other cultures (other than American?) are more
open and sharing ?? ..... There are a lot of American technetters that give
a lot to this and the other forums. The actually percentage of participation
by "culture", since it is a self-selecting group, can't be used as a
barometer. For instance, if you proportioned the participation by
dollars-shipped per country, that would change the percentage participation
as a function of dollars per technetter, to show higher participation by
Americans ...

Did I totally not "get it" - what you were trying to convey?

Valerie

In fact, the amount of information passed around on Technet is slightly
astonishing, that it is done so easily, and freely.... I find it telling
that the participation on Technet does not reflect the national distribution
of PCB production... that is to say, the majority of the participants on
Technet come from cultures that are more open, and sharing...
