Hi Sona:
I would use some scrap board and place different parts of it
over the fountain at different times ( seconds ) to get your limit. When
the material starts to darken or delam, that time is the limit. I would
stay under the limit. FR4 should be good for about 6 seconds at 500F. It
all depends on the fabricator.
Regards,
Ramon

Subject: [TN] Dwell Time
TechNetters,
I have to provide a length of time we can hold a board (FR4) over a
solder fountain (to remove a Pin Grid Array) before the board gets
damaged.
I need to know what that dwell time is.
Thanks,
Sona Sitapara
