Having a trinocular is a good tool for training. A camera can be connected to the third "eye" and displayed on a monitor. This is really nice to have when trying to show someone the fine points of repairs, circuit modifications, rework techniques such as BGA site preparation, etc. Usually one or two of them on a line is all that is necessary.

Hi Dave,
Binocular microscopes are simply the 'regular' two lens microscopes you see in regular use for inspections, i.e. two eyepieces. The trinocular usually has an added eyepiece tube in the top of the instrument so you can either mount a camera to take pictures of the item being inspected or have a 2nd person look through the 'monocular' tube (if you have the proper lens installed). We used to use some of these back in college Biology labs when we were teaching others what to look for (back in the "old days' before microscope picture projection/capture through a CCD eyepiece). Oops - dating myself here...

Dear Technetters,

Would anyone minde briefly explaining the difference between a binocular and a trinocular microscope and how which would be better for visual inspection?

Thank you in advance,

David
