I would agree with that with the addition of a need for greater resources
for the shops left standing.

With the expansion of overseas suppliers (mass volume low tech product) many
shops in the states did indeed die and with them some participants in
TechNet. But then IPC's focus (real or perceived) seemed to focus more on
non-fabrication issues and a push for Asian participation, both leaving a
bad taste in many mouths. I know shops that cancelled their IPC membership
as a result.

Now today, those shops left standing need to change their focus. In order to
continue to survive they need to expand their market and their capabilities.
This occurring at a time when resources for smaller to midsize shops are
scare, whether this be cash flow or talented, educated personnel are
lacking. Not that there is no talent out there, the talent has moved to
other industries or the company cannot afford the talent.

And I believe these shops need quick, responsive, supportive feedback to
meet their new challenges.

Assemblers and end users don't want to know their supplier is struggling
with fabrication of their design, fabricators (smaller shops especially)
don't want to proclaim their inadequacies to the greater market...so what do
you do...

I also believe the suppliers to fabricators need to participate in these
forums as well... but no, I am not proposing a Vendor forum next...

Okay, that was my Jerry McGuire moment...

Sadly, perhaps that is a reflection of the reduced number of fabricators.
