Edmund Optics has recently published a set of articles about evaluating imaging system performance.  Abridged versions can be found online:

The MTF targets look very interesting because they assess both resolution and contrast at the same time.

But they sell and support all kinds of targets.  Maybe we could ask them for support on this task?
