Yippee. I've been validated!!!! Nose grease, now there's a great image a
Friday morning.

I did work as a cook and dishwasher in a fine restaurant in my earlier
years. You are correct. I am fond of the quote that those who enjoy
sausage and legislation should not view their making. Or something like
that.

My hair is a good Norse blonde, a respectable amount left for a 46 year
old, though I am told the forehead is growing and that little circle in
back is growing.

A wife who plays ice hockey? Cool (no pun intended). Do you both have a
"cross checking" account. Some days I just slay me........

Doug's point about the gloves getting easily contaminated by nose grease
is valid. I've watched people working in a "clean area" do just that.
Now carry that one step further... Been to a restaurant lately? What do
you think the working environment is like in the kitchen? Just thinking
about it is turning my stomach. To "protect" the customers from human
bodily goo one would have to wear some sort of NASA suit. I find that
after several good ales or vodkas I have completely forgotten about this
detail and start to enjoy my meal.

Doug, you have hair left on your head? What is that like?

Happy weekend. Can't wait for 4:30. Going to the wife's ice hockey
tournament. Woohoo!

If my memory serves me correctly, the blue nitrile gloves causes too
much sweating of the hands, and we chose to supply anti-static PVC clean
room gloves instead (ISO Class 3 Compatible, Sealed Bag).

In reality, the operators in non-chemical applications typically prefer
to wear the cotton gloves with fingercots on top of them for their
comfort and dexterity.

Fingerprints alone are a valid reason to wear gloves for post cleaned
deliverable hardware, but engineering labs typically handle hardware
without wearing gloves.

For the ultimate in operator comfort, I have always liked the cotton
knit stretch gloves with the ESD vinyl coating on the palm of the glove,
but never actually implemented it due to the cost (although it has come
down quite a bit over the years).

I happen to think that the blue nitrile gloves are best for handling
pwb's and components.
I do not know if they present any outgassing or chlorinating issues.
I do know they will not snag on lead protrusions and other hardware,
inadvertently causing dropped assemblies. White cotton gloves snag like
crazy.
However, the blue nitrile gloves cannot be used on boards that are hot.
They have no insulative properties.
They tend to not absorb fluxes and chemicals, but they do get dirty and
need to be thrown and replaced periodically.
The blue nitrile gloves protect the operator's hands from chemical
exposure. White cotton gloves retain chemicals and prevent evaporation
from the operator's skin.
The blue nitrile gloves are available in ESD-safe type. I don't think
the white gloves are.
For these reasons I prefer the blue nitrile gloves. But the operators
prefer the white cotton gloves, as they are more comfortable than the
blue nitrile, especially if you have hairy hands like mine. Too bad more
of it does not grow on the top of my head.
But then maybe thats why I don't come up with all of those hair-brained
ideas like others I work with!

Technos,

the question is whether to wear or not to wear gloves on assemblies that
will be washed. I am fully aware of the solderability problems that can
occur without gloves, so let's stick strictly to the post-wash
contamination.

And in the same key, Doug was talking about not using white gloves that
have chlorines due to bleaching. Which are the gloves to wear?

Thank you,
Ioan
