Blair,

Back in 1993, when this was a Siemens facility, and I was fab guy at a different company, a Conceptronic Freedom 2000 component replacement machine was purchased. It has served well although it is quite outdated now even by equipment from the same company. Placement is microcopicly aligned and is exact. The problem, as i'm sure you'll find with almost any BGA replacement equipment, is that you'll spend about 6 minutes removing a BGA and about the same time replacing one. A bigger problem is that this type of equipment is best profiled using a scrap board and a 5 mil thermocouple placed in a ball. Guess what, you never get your scrapper because the first one you have to run of a part number is a one-of-a-kind-and-we-screwed-it-up (gosh-we-can't-lose-this) prototype or one from the first production lot (similarly valuable) of a new part number. Profiling can take from a half an hour to two hours but some times you can reuse one from an equivalent component on a different assembly with little modification. You hear little about them, but I'd give Conceptronic a call. They're in Portsmouth, NH. If you want more info, I'll provide it offline.
