Hi Blair,

I have been using an Ersa IR550A for my BGA's for a couple of years. It has worked pretty well. Some of its good points is that it uses IR to heat up the package, so it doesn't require nozzles, and it also employs a camera that allows you to see the balls collapse. One of the drawbacks has been that the IR reflows adjacent components as well. The top heater has an aperture adjustment to allow you to focus on a single component, but I didn't have much luck with it. Also, since the unit uses IR that needs to be absorbed by the component, it may have trouble heating a light colored component. My PBGA's are all black and have no trouble heating up.

Thank you,

Subject: [TN] BGA Rework Station Recommendations

I've proposed to management that since we will need a BGA rework station if/when we begin using BGAs, and since our current old pick and place machines aren't up to the task, and that since our initial usage at first will be low volume (5 to 10 per month) assemblies, that we look into procuring the rework station and use it for the initial placement of the BGAs after reflow (or maybe even carefully carry the placed assemblies to the rework station, place the BGA, the carefully carry back to the oven for reflow). Naturally, I got assigned the task of researching equipment and making the recommendation.

Do you have any recommendations on what equipment would be best suited for this, or what you have and what you like and don't like about it?

You can send replies offline if you would like.

Thanks,

Blair Hogg
