I use a OK Industries/Metcal 3591 CSP/BGA rework system. It works very well but it's difficult handling larger boards (the machine is too small.

What kind of SMT placement machines do you use currently?? One of the placement machines I use with BGA's is a Fuji IP2, the IP2 cannot "see" the balls of the BGA as it only has backlighting so we just look at the "Square or Rectangular" package and we must feed them from tubes as the Tray tower shuttle (MTU) cannot pull suction on the BGA's. It is a good argument for new equipment though....

Good luck

Subject: [TN] BGA Rework Station Recommendations

I've proposed to management that since we will need a BGA rework station if/when we begin using BGAs, and since our current old pick and place machines aren't up to the task, and that since our initial usage at first will be low volume (5 to 10 per month) assemblies, that we look into procuring the rework station and use it for the initial placement of the BGAs after reflow (or maybe even carefully carry the placed assemblies to the rework station, place the BGA, the carefully carry back to the oven for reflow). Naturally, I got assigned the task of researching equipment and making the recommendation.

Do you have any recommendations on what equipment would be best suited for this, or what you have and what you like and don't like about it?

You can send replies offline if you would like.

Thanks,

Blair Hogg
