Assuming, of course that it is a double sided pwb with no internal trace
connections to the barrel.

Before electroless copper, they were used to connect one side of a
circuit board to the other. They come in various sizes and are swaged
using a small press and anvil. Kind of dating myself here I guess, but I
remeber doing this back in the late 60s. They can be used today as a
repair connection on missing and unplated holes that need to be plated.
