Bill,
As George indicates below, users of each surface finish will be biased
toward the finish they are using. The truth be told, both finishes work
well. ENIG has had a past history of field failures, but in recent years
problems have been a lot less common. ENIG does require more process control
at the fabricator, but you can have problems with silver if the process is
not controlled.
George makes a good point that a fabricator that has only one of the
finishes will try to persuade you to their finish of choice. The best bet is
to talk to a fabricator that uses both finishes.
If you need help finding someone that uses both finishes, contact me off
line. I have a couple of customers that use both and I am sure I could get
someone that would be willing to share their experiences.

Bill,
Those who like ENIG (Electroless Nickel under Immersion Gold) are going
to tell you it's great and there should be no problems with using it
with SAC305 and VOC-Free flux. Those who use IAg (Immersion Silver) are
also going to tell you it's great and there should be no problems with
using it with SAC305 and VOC-Free flux. I'm one of those who use IAg
and believe that it is a good surface finish for standard SnPb assembly
or Pb-Free assembly. If I were to tell you about the potential problems
with using ENIG there would be those out there who would tell you that
there aren't any problems. I would suggest that you not listen to any
PCB fabricator who can only provide with one or the other and I also
wouldn't listen to any supplier who sells surface finish chemistry. Ask
as many PCB users as you can and find out what their experience has been
with different surface finishes and then make an informed decision. As
I indicated, IAg is the surface finish we prefer. But as I indicated
I'm only one user.
Regards,
George

To All: Have have read many articles regarding what folks are
recommending
as replacement coating for HASL. What are folks experiences with
Electroless
Gold and also Electroless Silver? Is one substantially cheaper than
the
other? Are there benefits of one over the other?
Will either cause any potential problems when using SAC 305 and a VOC
free
flux?
Thanks in advance for help with these issues!!!!!!
