Hi Blair,

I have had a lot of experience with rebuilding electric motors (farming
background). In my experience, once the brushes have worn down, you are
better off to replace them rather than wasting time trying to make the old
ones work. Of course, It Depends, on how worn the brushes are. Sometimes
they are salvagable, but more often, they are to far gone at the point you
have a problem. My suggestion is that you just replace them and see if a
neighbor will let you borrow a mower in the meantime. Don't want that grass
to get out of control.

Best Regards,

Joe Russeau

Subject: [TN] (OT) A soldering question, but not PCB

> Please excuse this off-topic post, but if there were anywhere that this
question could get answered, it would probably be here.

enough gas - runs normally, then slows down, then speeds back up again. Only
problem is that it is a B&D rechargeable electric mower.

> Well, being the engineer that I am, I take the thing apart and find that
one of the motor brushes has worn down to the point where the wire
connected, and now no longer makes contact except by accident. Further
investigation shows that the other end of the brush also has a contoured
edge, so I suspect that these are made symmetric to simplify assembly (can't
go in backwards), which suggests that if you knew about it you could reverse
them prior to it getting worn down this far thus extending the life.
>
> Well, I've ordered the replacement brushes from B&D, but I'm wondering if
I could reattach the wire somehow I could get it working again. The only
problem is that I don't know if I would be able to solder directly to the
brush. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try, but I'm wondering if any of our
experts out there has any advice on this.
