The requirement shows up in Mil-W-5088L in paragraph 3.14.9.

The document has been superseded by AS50881, paragraph 3.14.2.1.

3.14.2.1 Spare contacts: When crimp contact connectors are used, the
unused contacts shall be installed
in unused cavities. MS27488 or applicable sealing plugs shall be
inserted in unused grommet
holes of environment resistant connectors. Sealing plugs shall not be
installed where they
interfere with the free movement of the spring loaded socket termini on
connectors containing
fiber optic termini. For potted connectors, each spare contact shall
have a pigtail attached,
consisting of a wire of the largest size that can be accommodated by the
contact and extends 5
to 7 inches beyond the potting material. The pigtails shall be
identified and dead-ended. In
firewall applications there shall be no spare contacts. All unused
contact cavities shall be wired.
Stub wires shall be capped with polytetrafluoroethylene insulated
dead-end cap. M85049/80-XX
Shielded, Coaxial and Twinax dummy contacts shall be installed in
designated unused pin
contact cavities in the unpressurized areas (except firewall).

Subject: [TN] Connector Question

This question may fall a little outside this groups scope but it's the
only group I monitor and of course it's the best!

This falls under the ol' "We've always done it this way" heading.

We have a mil spec cable assemble that has a circular, MIL-C-26482,
connector on one end. We have always put an empty pin in any unused
holes with a plug. We have a new supplier that is not doing this. We
rejected the cables and they asked where the criterion was for the plug.

We cannot find a directive which mandates that unused pin locations be
plugged. We did find a reference in MIL-HDBK-454 which states, "Sealing
plugs should be inserted in the grommet holes of unused contacts in
environmentally sealed connectors." It's the good old "should" statement
and not a "Shall".

Any of you mil guys out there know where this requirement lives?

Thanks a bunch,

KennyB
