I didn't want to have Doug catch me napthing on this.
Doug is right on the Conformal Coat choice if you want to use silicone.
The original confusion with the term mineral spirits and dry naptha came
from use.
They were originally part of TT-T-291F which superseded the E revision
and TT-T-295.
Type I was known as Varsol or regular mineral spirits with a low flash
point.
Type II was also a regular mineral spirit with a higher flash point and
slower evaporation rate.
Type III had a higher flash point and was odorless.
There was no water allowed in any of them and they all had 0.50 %
benzene content. Dollars to Doughnuts ( to coin a phrase ),the higher
flash point and lower evaporation rates caused people to mix terms like
naptha and dry together to define them.

This spec was cancelled and superseded by A-A-2904.

A-A-2904 spec was cancelled and superseded by MIL-PRF-680A.

P-D-680 was a spec for Dry Cleaning and Degreasing solvent. You would be
hard pressed not to see the Naphta and dry cleaning connection.

P-D-680 was cancelled and superseded by ( drum roll here while we pause
for the spirit of the moment and my clean getaway ) MIL-PRF-680A.
Although there is no moisture allowed I'll sign my name anyway.

Subject: Re: [TN] "Dry" Naphtha

I think we are talking about two different, but similar materials.
Mineral spirits have a slower drying time than Naphtha. Both are
petroleum distillates. I know that we order them here as two different
materials.
Technically, gasoline and kerosene are both naphtha's as well.

I think the original reference to "dry" naphtha is a more refined grade
of naphtha were pains have been taken to remove the water. I suspect
technical grade naphtha may not be pure enough. Technical grade
isopropanol also has a fair amount of water in it. If you are using a
silicone conformal coating, water is the last thing you want around.

Steve, we use Dow Corning 1-2577, which is a silicone conformal coating.
We don't use the one that you cite, but I would be happy to help if I
can.
What questions do you have?

Steve,

On this website they equate it to Varsol, virgin mineral spirits. MY
GUESS would be that we are talking about mineral spirits where the
supplier has taken some pains to make sure there is very, very little
water in it.

142 Mineral Spirits

 55 gal. drum

Virgin Mineral Spirits- high flash (Varsol) (Kwik Dry Naphtha)

Subject: [TN] "Dry" Naphtha

Howdy All!

I got a call and an email from somebody from one of our other

facilities asking about "Dry" Naphtha. I told her I had never heard

of it.

She said that on the spec sheet for a Dow DC6-1104 RTV, it calls out

to mix 80% of Dry Naphtha with it to use for conformal coating

I've done a search and can't find anything on Dry Naphtha, I called

Tomco-Harwell (where we usually get our chemicals), and called

Dow Corning as well, but nobody can tell me what Dry Naptha is, or

where to get it.

Could it also be known as reagent grade Naphtha?

Even better still, has anybody out there worked with Dow DC6-1104

that can help me out about how to apply it as a conformal coating?

Kind regards,

-Steve Gregory-
