Since the requirements are ever changing the document has to
have dated revisions, and the order will comply with the latest rev of
the document.

Subject: Re: [TN] Specifying RoHS compliant Irradite

At a place where I worked before, we flowed down the RoHS requirements
in a document. The document was called out on the fabrication drawing
for pwb's, for metal parts, even for components and subassemblies. This
forced the fabricator/provider to read the applicable RoHS requirements
and provided a means of verification for us that we would not get
materials that were not RoHS compliant. If it is on the print, the
supplier is legally responsible. The document specified what the pwb
could not contain, prohibited platings for metal parts, prohibited
toxicants within the components themselves, etc. It was very detailed,
yet easy to understand. This system worked quite well. Having a single
document to flow down all of the purchased material requirements was
easier to manage than trying to put all of the different requirements on
all of the drawings. Unfortunately you cannot just call out "Compliant
to RoHS", because more specific information is needed than that.

Phil,
How about you put: "No coating with Cr VI may be used." or some
variation thereof on the drawing?

Have your plater supply you with his daily/weekly/monthly (pick one)
plating bath composition results.

This may be outside our groups purview, but I'll ask it anyway.

For our aluminum chassis sheet metal we have historically used Yellow
Irradiate. The information I'm getting for making this RoHS compliant
is to make sure the plating vendor used trivalent chromium rather than
hexavalent chromium for either clear or yellow irradiate.

It is also my understanding that there are similar "rules" for zinc
plating.

The real question is, how do I specify this on my assembly drawings and
purchase orders?

Am I going to get a true RoHS compliant plating? I can't be the only
person with this issue!

I'm sure I can go into did the plater have a dedicated RoHS plating
tank, is he telling me he complies but in reality he just lies?

Hey, I'm a cynic.
