Hi Phil: I believe it was you that originally brought up the hexavalent
topic back in July. The correct name is Iridite (14-2 probably being the
most famous) which is a trade name originally from Allied-Kelite now owned
by MacDermid. The correct call out is chromate conversion coating.

Rudy makes a good point, possibly you don't really need a chromate coating.
But let me give you the opposite input. If you specify a trivalent coating
to replace an existing hexavalent one you could have problems.

It depends on what you are using the coating for. If it's for a paint base
or a light class three coating you may be OK. If you are using it for
corrosion protection in severe environments you could be in trouble.

As Denny pointed out discuss the application with the chemical supplier.
Then do your testing on your product for qualification and performance.
Don't accept what the data sheet says as gospel.

Phil: Were I in your shoes, I would contact the plater, and find out the
name of his vendor for the Iridite.. (I believe that is the spelling?) and
contact the vendor, and ask the name(s) of his RoHS compliant coatings...
and specify those on your drawings...and get a letter from the chemical
vendor assuring you that his products are RoHS compliant.

No, you are not alone in this problem... one customer experimented and found
that due to other changes they had made in the process, a conversion coating
of this type was completely unnecessary...!

Phil,
How about you put: "No coating with Cr VI may be used." or some variation
thereof on the drawing?

Have your plater supply you with his daily/weekly/monthly (pick one) plating
bath composition results. Bev RIM

This may be outside our groups purview, but I'll ask it anyway.

For our aluminum chassis sheet metal we have historically used Yellow
Irradiate. The information I'm getting for making this RoHS compliant is to
make sure the plating vendor used trivalent chromium rather than hexavalent
chromium for either clear or yellow irradiate.

It is also my understanding that there are similar "rules" for zinc plating.

The real question is, how do I specify this on my assembly drawings and
purchase orders?

Am I going to get a true RoHS compliant plating? I can't be the only person
with this issue!

I'm sure I can go into did the plater have a dedicated RoHS plating tank, is
he telling me he complies but in reality he just lies?

Hey, I'm a cynic.
