The most likely contamination will occur when the operator picks up the
wrong soldering iron or solder. This is an unacceptable risk here. We
made room (it was not easy) to keep the lead and lead free on separate
benches. If you think your operators are better than this talk to some
of the companies that do no-clean and cleaned fluxes. Ask them how
often someone uses the wrong flux type if they are at the same bench.

Subject: [TN] Lead Free Conversion

A student has asked how far do they need to go to ensure no-cross
contamination between leaded and lead-free solders at a single
workstation? We have discussed the obvious, but the question become how
far to go? (Completely separate soldering stations is not an option.
Soldering operators will be soldering both lead-free and leaded at the
same workstation). The obvious we have discussed, separate:

Soldering station, tips and sponge
Solvent and brushes

Is there a possibility with cross contamination with use of hand tools
(e.g. cutters, pliers, tweezers, etc)?

Your comments are greatly appreciated.
