A number of companies made submissions to the EU for exemptions for special
purpose alloys including ourselves. In the main these applications total
from a few kg to a few hundred kg each per year. There were a couple of
submissions for very low MP alloys containing Cd [from companies other than
Indium Corp].
So far as I recall the most significant of these Cd containing alloys were
for safety devices. The alloy is made into a plug holding a sprung switch.
If the assembly is over heated the alloy melts so the switch operates. Quite
specialised in other words and difficult to do as cheaply, effectively,
reliably and fail safe any other way. The operating temperature has to be
quite specific and certain alloy combinations can be unique - meaning there
is no alternative.
A large number of pressure release valves, fusible plugs, links etc use this
simple principal, much more than have an electrical switch as it happens.
[LPG fuel tank, ceiling fire sprinklers are good examples.]

Subject: [LF] New Possible RoHS Exemptions

Dear All,

In the new edition of the UK Department of Trade and Industry's guidance
note on RoHS
(http://www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability/weee/RoHS_Regs_Draft_Guidance_August_2
005.pdf) they list nineteen new cases (on page 8) for possible exemption
that are being considered by the commission/consultants/TAC etc.

My query is this:

The third possible exemption states "Solders containing lead and/or cadmium
for specific applications". Now what are those "Specific Applications"???
Anybody got any ideas?

I've rung the DTI and they are just as much in the dark and are awaiting a
response from the commission. I'm about to email someone in the commission
to get their view, but wondered if anyone on this email forum knew anything.

Thanks.
