Hi Phil

For the record, MIL-I-46058C QUALIFIED materials are being maintained - we
have just qualified some new ones within the past month:
http://www.dscc.dla.mil/programs/qmlqpl/QPLdetail.asp?QPL=46058

This MIL standard has not been cancelled, it has been superseded by
IPC-CC-830RevB. (At least that is what I understand to be the case.) This
means that the DSCC will no longer develop the MIL-I-46058C it shall simply
remain extant in its current form.

What we are not clear about is for how long DSCC will continue to qualify
materials.

You are correct, IPC-CC-830 does not require independent testing, but then
this is simply an "industry norm" it is not a formally recognised standard.

So, you can indeed continue to call up MIL-I-46058C QUALIFIED coatings. Just
be aware that there are some unscrupulous folks out there who claim to "meet
the requirements" or "are approved to" which are simply weasel-words when
the product has not been INDEPENDENTLY tested and QUALIFIED - at great
expense!

Be aware that other moves are afoot to require UL 96V0 qualified materials
on new military applications, so include "UL Approved" on your drawings.

One more note, as we are supposedly in a "Global" market, you might wish to
reference IEC 61086. This is the International Electro-Technical Commission,
International Standard for Conformal Coatings. (www.iec.ch)

I hope this helps.
