Ken,
As already stated the best thing to do is get the contract
manufacture involved early on in the design (all parties testing,
manufacturing, and purchasing ......). I think this is the most
difficult part of the design phase for PCB design. One reason I say this
is because you maybe working with XYZ contract manufacture today but
tomorrow working with ABC contract manufacture, and what can be done or
accomplished at one facility may not be accomplished at the other. The
other would be getting the powers that be to understand that it may look
like the designs are taking longer to get developed but, the amount of
revs that have to be cut in order to get a production quality product
are less. Design rules can be broken the designer needs to understand
the trade offs i.e. reliability issues, hand rework, extra assembly
processes......
For now does your current contract manufacture offer a DFX
report or a list of problems they had during prototyping or pilot runs?
If not ask them to give you a list of problems, it's nice to have a
starting point.
Ask them to do a DFM check on your design, some contractors have the
ability to load the Gerber data and run it against DFM rules. If you are
looking for DFM guidelines there are a lot out there a quick search will
net quite a few links just remember some guidelines are manufacture
specific.

Regards,

Ted

Doesn't MoonMan have a pretty good book about this ?

Hi Ken,
Most fab houses have very good DFM guidelines for board layout on their
websites. It is a good place to start. Also, including your CM in the
design will give you a good set of eyes to help you review the layout
prior to fab to catch any assembly issues.

[TN] design verification

Hi Folks,

2 years ago my boss gave me the task of learning board layout. It's
something I wanted to learn to do, but have been frustrated on the lack
of
resources available.

Over the past 2 years I've managed to learn quite a bit, and each layout
I
do is progressively more complicated. The last board I worked on, was a
very dense 8 layer board, with several .8 mm BGAs. The board is up and
running, but there were several mistakes on it, and will have to be
turned.
I've been trying to think of ways to check and recheck my designs and I
wanted to find out what others do to verify the work they've done.

Thanks for any input.
