FWIW
In working for a service bureau for a number of years and getting my
chestnuts roasted for simple common mistakes (forest throught the trees), I
developed a comprehensive design checklist's to cover the more common items
that can go wrong.
I'm not sure about others, but it seemed to me more often than not I get
burned by "old familiarity" rather than "this is critical to the design".
Many designers I've met loathe checklist's, stating it's all up here
(pointing to their head). God Bless 'em. Murphy's Law is a clear and present
danger written in blood across my...... It's sucks when someone tell's you
50k boards are bad because in your rush to get them out and please
management you missed one simple thing.
Needless to say I like checklist's, as a former Submariner they make sense
to me. Perhaps this is why 4 different bosses from 4 different companies had
me write their ISO Design Guidelines. Currently working on the 5th and
hopefully last for my own company.

These checklist's come from 20 years of experience, plus countless other
years of experience from othe designers who contributed along the way. They
saved my tush on many occasion.

Longer winded than I wanted, but the point is, record and review what you
learn. Mistakes are human, repeating them is costly.

Subject: [TN] design verification

Hi Folks,

2 years ago my boss gave me the task of learning board layout. It's
something I wanted to learn to do, but have been frustrated on the lack of
resources available.

Over the past 2 years I've managed to learn quite a bit, and each layout I
do is progressively more complicated. The last board I worked on, was a
very dense 8 layer board, with several .8 mm BGAs. The board is up and
running, but there were several mistakes on it, and will have to be turned.
I've been trying to think of ways to check and recheck my designs and I
wanted to find out what others do to verify the work they've done.

Thanks for any input.
