That's kind of the same situation that I have here. If you're
familiar with a Altera Stratix BGA, they do have a heat sink,
or spreader in the top. It's a flip-chip BGA that's on a BT
substrate, with copper in the top...

If I can't find something close, I have an old Texas Instruments
BGA with a heat sink in the top that's about the same size that
I might use...at least it will get me close to the thermal mass.

Don't ya' just love to "wing-it" once in a while?

(that $3,700 price tag still gives me the creeps tho'...)

Well, its close, usually very close. We have done the same thing here. But
there can be quite a difference between a part with die and heat spreader
and a piece of fiberglass. I had an experience where the functional part
ran
20?C lower than my dummy part.

Richard,
This is brilliant. It solves a problem that has been a pain in the butt
for a while (shut up Hillman/Whittaker). How to get a non-daisy chained
BGA? make your own. Brilliant. I feel like the Guiness commercial.

I had the same problem with a 1064 ball uBGA, no samples to set up the
profile. So I purchased the reballing pre-forms from Winslow
Automation/6-sigma and epoxied the flat side to a peice of .062" FR-4. I
then had something reasonably close to the real thing.

Subject: [TN] Dummy 1020-ball, 1mm pictch BGA's...

Afternoon All!

I'm trying to find some dummy 1020-ball, 1mm pitch BGA's to help me
set-up my reflow profiles with. I don't want to use the actual parts to
tweek my profile, because these puppies are $3,700 each! (I get shivers
up and down my spine just thinking about how much these cost...)

I've contacted Altera (the manufacturer of the part), to see if I can
obtain mechanical samples....as you may have guessed, I'm still waiting
for an answer.

I've checked with Practical Components, Topline, STI, and Best, none of
them carry an 1020-ball BGA...

I'm asking if anyone knows of somewhere else I can check...

Kind regards,
