Hi Genny-

We keep a 'Material Specification Sheet' that we reference on all
assemblies. The sheet consists of rows of different types of materials
(flux, solder RTV, etc..) and columns of approved spec's for those
materials. In reality, the columns are materials we've agreed to with
various CEMs. It's noted on the sheet that the CEM must not mix materials
from multiple columns. In some instances, on the assembly drawing, we
specify which column is to be used (a specific conformal coat is desired,
for example).

If a new CEM comes on-line, we try to get them to use an existing set
(column). If it doesn't seem practical for them, and we can agree on what
they want to use, we add a column to the sheet.

It's not a perfect system, but seems to be working pretty well so far. And
it keeps you from having to edit beaucoup drawings when you change a
material spec....

For those of you that outsource your board stuffing to more than one
contractor...
We have 3-4 different CM's that we use for populating our boards.
Do you insist that they all use the same brand or type of solder paste/bar
solder, so that you can ensure compatibility with wire solder used in
house?
Or how do you determine if there will be compatibility issues?
Or do you not care as long as it is 63/37, or 62/36/2?
Does this become more critical with Pb free?
Do you have any difficulty getting different solder manufacturers to agree
to compatibility to one wire solder brand?
Or do you just use different wire solder based on who populated the board?

Thanks.
