TechNetters,

I have a question that may seem quite elementary to some of you, but I
need to ask it anyway. We are evaluating a through hole solder joint to
a Class 2 and are experiencing some variation in the circumferential
wetting on the secondary side of the PWB. Some of the solder joints are
exhibiting 270 degree wetting on the secondary side and also you can see
"daylight" through the barrel. According to the standard, 270 degree
of solder on secondary side is acceptable, the fact that you can see
daylight, though, does concern me.

I have examined the IPC-A-610D standard on the various requirements of a
solder fillet and the table that states for a Class 2 the solder wetting
on the secondary side should be 270 degree wetting to the lead and
barrel. I have looked at the vertical fill and it states that 75% is
the requirement for the barrel to be filled with solder. My question is
with these requirements, if you examine the solder joint and can see
"daylight" in the barrel, meaning you can see that there is not a
complete fill of solder in the barrel, is this considered a defect? I
have also looked at the "pin hole/ blowholes, voids" section and it
refers you back to the "criteria table" as to whether you have an
acceptable solder joint.

Please advise. Thanks.
