Lance, Richard,
Automobiles are exempt from RoHS, BUT there is EU ELV legislation, which
I know little about. But in another way they are not exempt - from the
effects of RoHS, because electronics suppliers to the auto industry are
going to find some parts can ONLY be procured in the Pb-free variety.

Batteries, ah now there is a can of worms. For every 100 pounds of
lead, our industry uses 1 pound (to exaggerate a bit), while the battery
boys use 80 pounds. They are quite proud of their 85% recovery rate,
which means they lose over 15X as much as we use!

And why isn't it 100%? Because, as I have stated before in this forum,
from a very interesting book called "The Economy of Waste" I read the
EPA found that primary lead smelting is done in parts of Montana and
Missouri that are not heavily populated while the secondary smelters are
all in CA, Texas and the east coast, all heavily populated. They are
concerned about airborne contamination from these smelters (so says the
book, so don't shot me!), so they have stopped pushing for 100%
recycling. The book then asks, without answering, what would happen if
we stopped all lead acid battery recyling. Now THAT statement should
elicit some response.

What is the rationale behind that? Automotive electronics are as
consumable as Sony CD players, and they all end up in a landfill, along
with the lead batteries and all of the lead solder in the wire
harnesses, etc. So how come they are exempt? One more bit of madness
with this whole lead-free thing.

Automotive is exempt.

Subject: [TN] Lead free in automotive

Good afternoon Technetter's;

Can anyone tell me how this "lead free fiasco" is going to affect the
automotive industry? Does this mean that all the gauges, batteries and
who knows what else is going to have to be changes over to lead free?

I'm welcoming for all comments.

Thanks in advance
