Not wanting to get too off track here, but the USA is a republic and the
only purpose of the FEDERAL gov't is to protect the states - NOT regulate
them...

Subject: [LF] AW: [LF] New Jersey, ban of lead in "S1861"?

Hello Peter,

thank you for your answer. That's quite the fact, I wanted to know. My
intention was just to gain an overview, what's going on in the U.S. with
legislation, and I totally agree with you, that this topic should be covered
from one single, national law.

Gerhard

I am in New Jersey, maybe I can help a bit here.

S1861 (and companion bill A3057) have both been drafted and referred to
committee. Neither have yet been added to their respective committee
schedules. From there, they still require 2 more readings, debate, and
amendments before being considered for vote. So it looks like it could
still be a while. The vice-chair of the Senate committee is the Senator
from my district. I can contact him if anyone has more questions. Since
his office is about a mile from mine, he might be interested in how this
affects a local firm.

Two other notes on this:
Both bills also inclue WEEE provisions.

Both bills include this line: This bill is based on substantially similar
legislation currently pending in the Rhode Island Legislature.

I know the federal government is trying to avoid this issue, but I wish they
would step up and put these under a single, national law. Not likely, with
the current debates on "states rights".
