VPI recently discontinued its "Glaze" product, but a number of companies
have Dissipative Floor Finishes to transform most any hard floor into an
ESD Floor. Periodic re-application is required.

Per ESD Handbook TR20.20 section 5.3.4.2 Functions of Static Protective
Floor Materials
"Floor finishes and topical antistats, on the other hand, function by two
separate mechanisms. First, they reduce the surface's tendency to generate
a static charge. Second, they provide a path for the dissipation of charge.
The charge may dissipate over the surface of the finish or it may dissipate
to ground if the floor finish is grounded."

Per section 5.3.4.7.8 Floor Finishes "Static-limiting floor finishes are
applied to a variety of existing floors--standard
vinyl, rubber, or vinyl composition tile, or static control flooring--to
reduce the generation of electrostatic charges. As a floor finish, they
protect and they improve the appearance of the floor, and make floor
maintenance easier. Floor finishes have flexibility of use, can be applied
throughout a facility, and can provide whole area protection.

These materials also have some disadvantages. Some surfactant type finishes
may become too slippery. Some finishes are subject to being washed off with
ordinary water. Some finishes can be worn away readily. They require
additional monitoring to make sure that the finish is still working.
Improper application and maintenance may cause inconsistent performance of
the finish. Some floor finishes may be incompatible with clean room
requirements."

Regarding the "too slippery" comment, some products are UL listed regarding
slip resistance.

Bob,

What ever you do to that floor, DON'T WAX IT!

I have an emotional response to you query. In a previous life, we
installed an ESD floor and it worked perfectly until a maintenance man
one evening waxed it, destroying about 10,000 sq. ft. of ESD floor
tiles.

Now there may be a floor wax which will not damage the ESD floor tile. I
would recommend that you contact the ESD floor tile's manufacturer to
determine what materials to use to clean the floor. You will ruin the
properties of the floor if you do not follow the maintenance procedures.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck.

Good Morning All,

I have a question regarding ESD flooring. Does flooring tile have to be
ESD tile or can you just wax over tile with ESD wax?

Thanks,
