Hi Joe: That reminds me of another PCB shop story. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
This was about 20+ years ago. We had a lab tech that we called "Fast Ronnie"
he was always in a hurry and never followed established procedures very
well.
We were running a sulfuric/peroxide microetch on our electroless Cu line.
After the mircoetch bath was analyzed Ronnie was supposed to make an add of
concentrated H2SO4(98%) and concentrated H2O2(50%). Adds were made using a
polypro 3L graduated cylinder which resembles a small cannon.

Anybody that understands basic chemistry knows not to combine concentrated
sulfuric acid with a strong oxidizer(conc hydrogen peroxide).
The adds are to be made independently and thorough rinsing of the graduated
cylinder done before the next chemical is added. Well Fast Ronnie lived up
to his nickname, he added the sulfuric but was is such a hurry it did not
completely empty the cylinder. There was still part of the sulfuric left in
the bottom. He then added the conc peroxide and started to walk over to the
microetch tank... he never made it. The chemicals combined and the whole
thing went off like the cannon it was. Blew out over a dozen ceiling tiles,
rained sulfuric peroxide over the tanks and platers. Some of the platers
claimed they saw yellow/tan fireballs shooting across the room like a
fireworks display. The only thing that saved Ronnie was his face shield and
rubber apron and gloves.
Needless to say we had a fun time with the Fire dept, OSHA and the insurance
guys. Ronnie thankfully transferred into MLB lamination area.

It appears the merry pranksters are alive and well. Of course, none of this
could or would be done today without fear of serious legal reprisals and
lots
of money for pain and suffering (with the lawyer getting 50% or any
proceeds).

It reminded me, however, of a more harmless event some 30 plus years ago. I
came in early (about 3AM) on 3rd shift at a PCB shop I was working at one
winter day to run analysis on some copper plating baths that were being
carbon
treated. I wander out to the plating area to find 3 of the platers sitting
in a
400 gallon plating tank (post rinsing) and refilled with RO water which had
been
heated to a comfortable temperature. It was pretty comical sight.

Needless to say they were told clean the tank again after the major "bits"
of
"organic contamination" were removed and not to repeat the activity.
