Blair;

I have a white board in my office that has had notes on it for at least
the past 6 months. I just attempted to clean it after reading your post, and
I can see your frustration. I was able to clean off the old stuff with stamp
pad ink reactivator. It worked great compared to alcohol, or window cleaner.
It's nasty stuff though - Flammability = 3, Health = 1, Reactivity = 0,
Personal Protection = B. I'm not sure waxing would be a good idea, it may
prevent the dry erase markers from writing on it at all. Maybe a small test
spot in a corner with your favorite wax would be a good test. My favorite
window cleaner is Rain-X. It will provide a protective film that makes rain
bead up and run off. Maybe you can test it on a corner of one of your
boards. I've found it at most auto supply stores. I usually buy the
concentrate and mix a capful with a quart of water. Good luck!

Subject: [NTC] - (Sort of) Need help from the chemical gurus out there

I thought this would be a good question for Friday, not related to lead in
solder or anything similar....

We have a training / breakout room with large white boards on the walls. The
standard cleaner works OK for removing the markings left on for days or
weeks, but some still remains. Is there a better cleaning solution (not
likely, you would think that the experts in white board markers would know
how to remove this stuff if it sits dried for a while) that will clean these
boards?

Second question - can the white boards be waxed periodically to improve
their cleaning performance? What type of wax would be best?

Happy Friday,

Blair
