???!!! What in the world gave you THAT idea!!

I think banning lead in electronics manufacturing is a terrible idea.

I will send you a paper I just presented at the International Lead-free
Conference in Toronto. In the paper we show data that would indicate
that the chances of anything coming out of a well-maintained landfill
are pretty low.

Bev,

it seems you are a proponent of the legislation. When is the ban on lead
batteries going to occur?? I throw away WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY more batteries
than
I do PCBs.

Richard,
Toxic to whom? If you are talking people, silver of course is not as
toxic or my Grammie would have died before 89 from eating with
silver-plated utensils. If you are talking single-celled aquatic
organisms, well that is another matter. We should also looked at what
it takes to extract a kilo or lead vs. a kilo of silver in terms of
energy, chemicals used, etc., etc.

Shhhh...don't give them ideas, Graham.
Along the same line, isn't silver just as toxic, if not worse? Or am I
wrong?
But we need to build everything with silver added to the solder paste,
the board finish, and the component finish, albeit a smaller percentage.
And because the lead-free, but silver-bearing consumer devices will
supposedly have a lower reliability factor, we will actually be dumping
more of the lead-free stuff into the landfills. It will just cost us
more to manufacture it. And of course, with a cost increase in
materials. That cost increase is not going to be absorbed by the vendor
and manufacturer, it will be passed on to the consumer. So we will be
dumping much more into the landfills, and will pay more for the
privelege. Right?

I'm guessing Ramon has already been affected, I know we have, and are in
similar industries. Prices seem to be climbing for Pb materials - as
can be predicted by the reality of decreased volume production. And,
more importantly, component finishes are being changes - some times with
different part numbers, some times with notification as bogus as a "pb
free" sticker stuck on the side of the reel of parts.

Ah well. Buy the ticket, take the ride. Next thing they'll be banning
copper...

Hi Ramon,
it is that kind of thinking that gets us into trouble. Just because you
are not exporting to the EU, or because your part of the industry is
exempt, does NOT mean that you are not affected--YOU WILL BE AFFECTED.
that is because, you will not be able to buy SnPb-parts.
