Sorry Rudy, Thanks but I think that's not right. American English didn't
spring out of nowhere. The English that the original settlers took to
America was the exact same as the stay behinds and obviously the same age.
It just grew differently. In fact many, what to British ears are
"Americanisms", are actually older English expressions that we stopped
using. Fall, mugger, railroad, turnpike, to name but four. Many North
American origin expressions have become part of British English without
people now realising their trans-Atlantic origin.
I recommend "Made in America" by Bill Bryson as a very accessible,
informative and amusing accounting of this.
Or have I now started another British/American cultural TechNet dispute? in
which case I apologies and surrender immediately.
