The members of the Solder Paste Working Group led by Dr Wallace Rubin, did
the testing that provided the needed R & r input data on test methods to the ISO
TC44/SC12 "Soldering Materials." In particular, we were evaluating the
Brookfield Viscometer and the Malcom Spiral Pump viscosity tester. In this case,
one of each of the instruments was circulated in turn to many laboratories. A
large sample of high viscosity paste was prepared by one company, a large
sample of low viscosity paste was prepared by a second company. These large samples
were sub-divided into small samples; then one each sample of high and low
viscosity pastes dispatched to each test laboratory. (As I recall, the two makers
were Alpha and Kester).
When all the data were available, they were evaluated by a Ministry of
Defence computer program to yield the needed 'R and r' results.
