Hi Barbara!

First, one needs to understand the environment that the assemblies are
going to be subjected to, then one needs to understand the limitations of
each type of coating.

Parylene coatings are probably the most durable, but without a doubt the
most
expensive. It is applied by a vapor deposition process under vacuum. It
requires
special equipment to do that process...expect to pay in excess of $150K for
the
equipment.

We also have the capabilities to apply three other coating types here;
Acrylics,
Urethanes, and Silicones. I would say that we do a 50/50 split of Acrylics
and
Urethanes on product that we coat here...most of them are military/defense
products. We haven't coated anything with silicone for quite a while...

I want to add, that we do not do this as a service...the assemblies that we
coat are
product that we build for our customers.

Spray coating is exactly how we apply our coatings. The actual spraying is
not the
biggest labor drain, it's the masking of areas that you DON'T want the
coating on that
that requires the most labor. But there are ways to reduce that labor by
using reusable
masking boots, etc., to cut down the time required to mask off an assembly.

Kind regards,

Well, my company now has an application requiring conformal coating on
some small assembled boards. We need to mask off 3 connectors and coat
everything else.

I have some information on a product called Parylene applied by Parylene
Coating Services, Inc. in Katy, Texas.

We did a small lot with a simple spray-on process, but that is not the
way to do production runs, of course.

What would you recommend?

Thanks,

Barbara
