It's the Friday thread that will not die...

My 5 year old asked me what "IF" spelled. I asked him what sound the "I"
made, he replied "ih". I asked what sound the "F" made, he replied "fff". I
asked him to put them together, and he pronounced "if". Then he asked me
what "OF" spelled. I gave up.

Won't even get into bough, cough, dough, rough, and through. I can barely
keep them straight myself.

Makes me think of a phonetic language proposal floated some years ago on the
Internet where all unused letters were removed and all consonant sounds like
the "hard C" were replaced by the letter K. It was a bit Germainc in
appearance, but if you just let go of your prelearned English it was
actually eaiser to read.

I remember my kids asking questions about Lead vs Lead or Read vs Read. And
then there is polish versus Polish. Ah, English is such a quirky and wacky
language. Sort of a melting pot of all the other languages.

Phil
